The padel racket market is large and confusing when you are new to it. Which shape, which weight, which material, and how much should you spend? These are the four questions that matter for beginners.
Shape: round or teardrop, never diamond
Padel rackets come in three shapes: round, teardrop and diamond.
- Round: sweet spot high and wide, maximum control, the most forgiving. The ideal beginner shape.
- Teardrop: sweet spot slightly lower, all-round in character. Good for beginners who also want a little more power.
- Diamond: sweet spot low, plenty of power but little control. For advanced players with specific techniques. Not for beginners.
As a beginner you choose round or teardrop. The shape makes more difference than the brand or the price.
Weight: 350 to 370 grams
350 to 370 grams is the ideal range for beginners. Lighter feels unstable against hard shots. Heavier tires the arm over longer sessions and raises the risk of injury. Most decent mid-range rackets fall into this range anyway.
Material: carbon or fibreglass?
A carbon face gives direct feel for the ball and is stiffer: you sense exactly what the ball is doing. Fibreglass is softer and absorbs more shock, which helps if you are prone to elbow trouble. For most beginners with no history of injury, carbon is a good choice. If elbow pain is a concern, go for fibreglass or a hybrid.
Price: how much should you spend?
A solid beginner racket costs €60 to €120. In that range you get carbon or fibreglass with an EVA foam core and a decent lifespan. Above €150 you are largely paying for a brand name and marketing aimed at advanced players. As a beginner, that money is better spent on coaching or balls.
