Padel racket cover: why a protective case is worth it

A padel racket is an investment. Whether you pay around €80 for an entry-level model or €119.99 for a Full Custom racket with your own name on it, without decent protection it will wear out sooner than it needs to.

What actually damages a padel racket?

Plenty of players assume the main threats are on court: the wall, the floor, a hard ball. True enough, but off court the wear factors are at least as significant.

• Knocks in the kit bag. A racket rolling loose next to shoes and a water bottle picks up small scratches on the frame and face at every session.
• Damp and condensation. A changing room or a wet car boot attacks the bond between the layers of the face, particularly with carbon.
• UV light. Direct sunlight fades the print on a custom racket faster than you would expect.
• Pressure from things stacked on top. A heavy bag or suitcase resting on an uncovered racket can deform the frame.

Hard shell or soft shell?

This is the first choice you make. Both have their place, depending on how you treat your racket.

Hard-shell padel cover

A hard-shell cover, such as the carbon-look version we offer, has a rigid outer panel that takes the impact instead of the racket. Ideal if you check your bag in, cycle to the court, or carry several rackets at once. The trade-off: slightly heavier than a soft shell.

Soft-shell padel cover

Light, flexible and cheaper. A soft shell is fine for players who place their racket carefully in the bag and store it indoors. Less suitable if your racket sometimes stays in the car or travels by air regularly.

What makes a cover right for a custom racket?

If you have had a custom padel racket made, the print on the face is the most vulnerable part. The print is UV-resistant and weatherproof, but it is not armour. A cover that fully encloses the face, with no open cut-out at the front, gives the best protection.

It also helps if the zip opens far enough to get the racket in and out easily. A shoulder strap is welcome if you walk or cycle to the court.

Which materials make a good padel cover?

Not every cover is the same. The outer shell and the lining together decide how much protection you get.

Outer shell

Hard-shell covers are often made from ABS plastic or a carbon-look composite, which absorbs a knock without deforming. Soft-shell covers usually use neoprene or polyester, much like a laptop sleeve. Neoprene cushions a little but gives way under outside pressure.

Lining

Look for a padded lining, thin fleece or foam, that stops the face being scratched as you slide the racket in and out. A racket rattling around in an unlined cover is worse for your custom print than no cover at all.

Zip

A sturdy, wide-opening zip is practical and often overlooked. A narrow zip that forces you to angle the racket in damages edges and grip. On our premium cover the zip opens along three sides, so the racket goes in and out easily.

Sizing: will a universal cover fit your racket?

Almost all padel rackets are round or teardrop shaped and fall within a standard size range: roughly 45 cm long and 26 cm wide. A universal padel cover fits nearly every brand and model. With diamond-shaped rackets, which are wider at the top, it can be a tight fit, so always check the stated dimensions of the cover.

Padel covers and travel: what to know

Do you ever fly with your racket? Airlines often allow padel rackets as hand luggage, but in a soft bag they are at risk in the hold. A hard-shell cover offers considerably more protection when your bag goes into the hold than a kit bag with loose compartments.

If you travel often, a cover with separate pockets for spare grips or balls is handy too. It saves room in your kit bag and keeps everything together.

Looking after your padel cover

A padel cover picks up sweat and dirt after every session. A soft lining also holds dust, which then rubs across the face of your racket. The basics:

• Shake it out after every use. Sand and small pieces of grit are the main cause of scratches on the face.
• Wipe it with a damp cloth. Once a month, give the lining a wipe with a lightly damp cloth.
• Do not store it wet. Patting a racket dry after rain before it goes into the cover prevents mould forming inside.
